MISSION STATEMENT

In accordance with the unique needs and demands of the military population, Rio Salado Military Programs provides comprehensive services that enable students to reach their educational goals through:

The Military Leadership program is designed to provide active, guard, reserve, veteran or retired military personnel with leadership training that will develop and enhance their skills and professional opportunities. The coursework will cover communication methods, leadership styles, organizational behavior concepts, employee motivation, and the decision-making process. An emphasis is placed on leadership skills and current leadership challenges. The program includes a Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Military Leadership and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Military Leadership.

PROGRAM COMPETENCIES

• Evaluate and select microcomputer hardware and software for specific applications.
• Explain basic graphics, sound, process control, and other special capabilities of a microcomputer.
• Compose various internal and external business correspondences including letters, memos and reports.
• Summarize the value of using visual aids in a presentation.
• Prepare a visual aid and effectively use it in a presentation.
•  Explain and use effective communication methods.
• Explain the decision-making process and its effects on employees.
• Describe the importance of human relations in organizations.
• Explain various management terms, leadership styles and organizational behavior concepts.
• Summarize the importance of employee motivation.
• Summarize the leader’s role in the change process.
• Describe various challenges facing today’s leaders.

Due to the respect and acknowledgement for the intensive, focused education and training within the military, this program is designed to maximize this unique and specialized experience; and provide an educational credential for use in post-military life.

Assessments in the individual courses are tied to lesson objectives as well as course competencies. They include both subjective and objective assessments that challenge students to demonstrate their skill level. Summative assessments (midterm and final exams) are designed to have students apply their knowledge and understanding of key concepts and think critically about how those concepts can be applied to real-life situations.

For the CCL in Military Leadership, final assessments/projects for BPC110, GBS233, and MGT251, were pulled from RioLearn/Perception, Rio's online grading tool. Of all students in the program who earned a CCL degree during Fiscal Years 2009 and 2010, the overall final exam/project pass rate for the three classes was 86.67%.
