Union Institute & University

Brief Accounts of Institutional Philosophy

Academic Model

Since 1964, Union Institute & University (UI&U) has redefined higher education by placing the adult learners it serves at the center of their own education. Learners choose Union to complete an unfinished degree, obtain an advanced degree, or fulfill a lifetime goal.

UI&U learners can learn any time and anywhere without interrupting family and community commitments. Most UI&U programs offer a blended learning model combining brief on-campus learning activities with independent study; online programs and courses are also available. Union's liberal policies for recognition of prior learning for credit means that many learners can complete their degrees more quickly than would be possible at other colleges and universities.

Enrolling at Union Institute & University is the first step in what many learners find to be a life-changing experience. Union works hard to fulfill its vision of social relevance and our graduates truly make a difference in the world. We support the efforts of our learners, faculty, and alumni to be catalysts of change. Union graduates work in small and big ways to advance change in their communities everyday - many alumni have gone on to leadership roles in their organizations and communities.

Mission Statement

Union Institute & University empowers adults to acquire, apply, and create knowledge through interdisciplinary, flexible, and collaborative programs focusing on social relevance, personal enrichment, and professional advancement.
