In some competency-based programs, you may not take any courses. Instead, you will have to pass a number of tests that are required within a program in order to earn a degree or certificate. These types of competency-based programs may provide, or partner with, a number of fully-online or hybrid course offerings that are geared toward helping students gain the necessary knowledge and ability to pass the required tests. Competency-based programs also may include the practice of assigning mentors to students. These mentors provide ad-hoc guidance and advice via telephone, e-mail, or instant messaging in relation to successfully completing a program.
